the Most common and most recognised Lightning protection system(s) is a metal rod mounted on a structure and intended to protect the structure from a lightning strike. If lightning hits the structure, it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through a wire, instead of passing through the structure, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution. Lightning rods are also called finials, air terminals, or strike termination devices.
Steeplejacks erect ladders on church spires, industrial chimneys, cooling towers, bell towers, clock towers, or any other high structure. In the UK, steeplejacks now use a belay rope fall-arrest system (similar to the method used by rock climbers) attached to the ladders as they are erected to eliminate solo climbing and greatly reduce the risk of falls from height.
Once ladders have been erected, the next stage is usually to suspend a bosun's chair (a strong wooden plank on which the steeplejack can sit, pull himself upwards or lower himself downwards, or sit in a stationary position), but abseiling (UK) or rappelling (US) equipment is replacing the bosun's chair on many operations because of its lighter weight.
Receiving a test certificate provides you with an acknowledgement that the building has passed the British Standard and has a safe lightning conductor system.
Strike risk assessments can be carried out on your building to ascertain if the building requires lightning protection or if the existing system has been installed to the correct
level
Describes the lightning conductor system that your building has installed. It also details the materials that have been used, the number of down conductors and the size of the tape.
After testing , you will always get a drawing of exactlywhere the earth positions are on your building. This allows us to link the place of the earth and any defects to it as clearly as possible.
An earth record sheet tells you the earth resistance of each rod position, the location in the system and which type of pit it is installed in.
No Problem! get in touch today and our team will be able to schedule an appointment for an engineer to come and access the current system you have installed currently and indicate if it applies to the BS62305 (Current) or past regulations.
Please Note: All Ohmic Reading (Earth Reistance Tester(s) are calibrated on an annual basis if you require a duplicate copy of our calibration certificate alongside with your report please do not hesitate to ask!
As a steeplejack company we are able to offer you a cost saving(s) inspection and maintenance service upon all manner of high rise buildings. On completion of any survey carried out detailed digital reports are submitted supported by photographic evidence of any defective areas located. We pay particular attention on the use of epoxy mortar and brickwork. The application of sealants, installation of stainless steel bolts and safety anchor fixings are some of the services that we can offer!
We undertake all manner of industrial painting upon high rise building, chimneys, pylons, oil tanks and radio masts using materials such as chlorinated rubber, heat resistance and twin pack epoxy paints. Utilising cost saving skills and methods the cleansing and application of paints etc are carried out in a safe and controlled environment
A Harfield Steeplejacks specialises in caring out quinquennial surveys upon ecclesiastical structures to ascertain their present condition. Video & Photographic services are available to demonstrate immediately any defective areas located. Restoration of church towers and spires are currently in operation working in conjunction with the rules and specifications of the diocesan surveyor's requirements. All Necessary repairs. such as re-shingling spires and masonry we can confidently carry out.

Our skilled design and fabrication team with exact attention have and are are at present, confidently fulfilling regular contract projects throughout the U.K so whatever your project we can guarantee you an efficient and competitive service!
We will determine whether the rolling sphere, protective angle or mesh method of lightning protection works best for your property and will design & install it to your requirements
Vital for the dispersion of the lightning current. In line with current standards we recommend a single integrated earth termination system which combines lightning protection with power and telecommunication system protection.
Designing down conductors to take the lightning current from the air termination system to the ground. The number and locations of the down conductors will be designed to ensure maximum current share.
The isolated HVI conductor is an innovative solution. It provides the installer of lightning protection systems with the revolutionary possibilities for design, allowing isolated conductors to be installed in areas where conventional systems should not be used.
